An important part of the Group's environmental footprint is made up of employee business trips. Just think that in 2019 we travelled over 195 million km for work purposes, mainly by car but also by train and plane. The equivalent of going to the Moon and back about 250 times.
For this reason we are implementing strategies for the sustainable management of business travel, seeking to reduce the related greenhouse gas emissions.
First and foremost, we try to cut down business travel by promoting the use of video and teleconferencing and smartworking, now available in 62% of the Group's entities. The aim is to extend remote work to the entire Group, where applicable according to local regulations, by 2021. In Austria, France and Italy there are also tele-appraisal systems for claims management, which reduce the number of car journeys by assessors.
The travel policy favours the use of public transport over private cars and, among public transport, promotes those with less impact on the environment, such as the train instead of the plane. Our car policy sets maximum limits on CO2 emissions for company cars.
